Top Pakistani Engineers and Founders Shaping the Future of Technology

Top Pakistani engineers educated at home are now building foundational quantum systems, enterprise AI platforms, and the architecture of global cybersecurity.

Pakistan’s technology narrative tends to concentrate on export figures, freelancer growth, and unicorn counts. What it rarely interrogates is the depth of technical expertise that has emerged from institutions like NED University of Engineering and Technology in Karachi, and from the engineering and software communities in Lahore that have produced some of the country’s most consequential technical founders. The six engineers profiled below did not make the NFAP’s unicorn list, or they built companies that predate the unicorn era entirely. What they built is harder to quantify in a single headline but no less significant in its scale. They produced the architecture of global cybersecurity, the semiconductor infrastructure that powers modern networking, the world’s largest quantum computing IPO, an autonomous AI agent network, and a sovereign enterprise AI platform that organisations across three continents are now using to own and operate their own intelligence infrastructure.

Their technical formation happened in Pakistan. Their work is foundational to global technology.

Here are six Pakistani engineers shaping the frontier right now.

Ilyas Khan, Founder, Quantinuum

Ilyas Khan is a British Pakistani entrepreneur whose grandparents emigrated from the subcontinent to Lancashire in the 1930s. He founded Cambridge Quantum Computing in 2014, focused on quantum software, cryptographic algorithms, and quantum machine learning. In 2021, he merged the company with Honeywell Quantum Solutions to create Quantinuum, which listed on the Nasdaq in June 2026 at a valuation of $15.7 billion, making it the largest quantum computing IPO on record. Khan’s stake was valued at approximately $2.2 billion following the listing. His achievement represents Pakistani-origin entrepreneurship at the frontier of fundamental science, built across a decade in a field most investors considered too early, culminating in a market validation event that reshaped how the global technology industry priced quantum capability.

Muhammad Raghib Hussain, CEO, Altera

Muhammad Raghib Hussain graduated from NED University of Engineering and Technology in Karachi in 1992 and went on to co-found Cavium, a semiconductor company specialising in multi-core processors for networking and storage applications. Marvell Technology acquired Cavium in 2017 for $6 billion, one of the largest semiconductor acquisitions of that year. Hussain subsequently served as President of Products and Technologies at Marvell before being appointed CEO of Altera in May 2025, after Silver Lake acquired a 51 per cent stake in Intel’s FPGA business at an $8.75 billion valuation. Altera is now the world’s largest pure-play FPGA semiconductor solutions company, supplying programmable logic devices to data centres, telecommunications infrastructure, and defence systems globally. Hussain’s trajectory from NED’s engineering classrooms to leading a company at the centre of global semiconductor supply is among the most significant in Pakistan’s technical diaspora.

Muhammad Umar, Co-Founder, CodeNinja

Muhammad Umar is one of the co-founders for CodeNinja, one of the fastest growing AI companies in Pakistan. In 2023, CodeNinja secured a $1.6 million seed investment led by sAi Venture Capital, directed at expanding the company’s enterprise data and AI capabilities. In July 2026, Umar along with CPO Ibrar Hussain launched Hyper Anthologies, a sovereign AI ecosystem built around a question that most enterprise AI vendors do not ask: who owns the intelligence an organization’s AI generates, not just the infrastructure it runs on?

The proposition is that organizations should build and retain their own intelligence, compounding it over time within infrastructure they control, rather than renting access to reasoning that runs on someone else’s systems and disappears after execution. For the region, the significance is material. Enterprises across South Asia and the Gulf have long depended on platforms built by and for Western markets to manage their intelligence infrastructure. Hyper Anthologies is a locally built answer to that dependency, the first enterprise-grade sovereign AI ecosystem developed at scale from within the region itself.

Rehan Jalil, Founder, Securiti.AI

Rehan Jalil is a Karachi-born NED University alumnus who founded Securiti.AI, an AI-powered data privacy and governance platform that helps enterprises automatically discover, classify, and protect sensitive data across cloud and on-premises environments. The company’s relevance grew sharply as data privacy regulation tightened across the US, EU, and Gulf, and as AI governance requirements created new demand for systems capable of managing what information models were trained on and where sensitive data resided. Veeam Software acquired Securiti.AI for $1.725 billion, integrating it into one of the world’s leading data protection platforms. Jalil’s exit represents one of the largest acquisitions of a Pakistan-origin founder’s company in the AI security space, and demonstrates the commercial scale available to Pakistani engineers who build at the intersection of enterprise data management and regulatory compliance.

Ashar Aziz, Founder, FireEye (now Trellix)

Ashar Aziz was born in Karachi in 1959 and graduated from MIT before founding FireEye in 2004. He had become convinced that existing security approaches could not handle the sophistication of emerging threats, and built FireEye around virtual machine-based threat detection, sandboxing suspicious files in isolated environments to observe their behaviour without risking production systems. FireEye went public in 2013, briefly making Aziz the first Pakistani-American tech billionaire. The company became a critical component of US government cyber defence infrastructure, and was the firm that identified and publicly disclosed the SolarWinds supply chain attack in December 2020, one of the most significant cyberattacks against US government networks on record. FireEye was later acquired by STG and rebranded as Trellix. Aziz’s contribution to the architecture of modern cybersecurity is foundational in the most literal sense of the word.

Humayun Sheikh, CEO and Co-Founder, Fetch.ai

Humayun Sheikh studied at NED University of Engineering and Technology in Karachi before moving to the United Kingdom. He was a founding investor in DeepMind, the AI research laboratory that Google acquired in 2014 and that has since produced AlphaFold, one of the most consequential scientific contributions of the past decade. Sheikh co-founded Fetch.ai in 2017 to build a decentralised network for autonomous AI agents capable of executing tasks, negotiating contracts, and transacting independently without human intervention at every step. He continues to lead Fetch.ai as CEO and was a featured speaker at London Tech Week 2026. Sheikh represents a model of Pakistani technical leadership that predates the current AI wave by nearly a decade, and has been building foundational infrastructure for autonomous systems long before autonomous agents became a mainstream enterprise priority.

What Pakistan’s Technology Ecosystem Should Take From This

The six engineers above share a pattern that the domestic technology conversation has not sufficiently absorbed. Their technical formation happened in Pakistan, in classrooms at NED University and engineering institutions in Karachi and Lahore, and through the kind of rigorous discipline that Pakistan’s best technical education has consistently produced. What came after was shaped by access to capital, market scale, and institutional networks that, for most of this generation, were not available at home.

That gap is beginning to close. CodeNinja’s sovereign AI delivery model is building the kind of capability in Lahore that foreign enterprise clients are prepared to pay for, on Pakistani terms. Motive’s engineering operations in Lahore and Islamabad are creating a direct connection between Pakistan’s software talent and the operational requirements of a major US technology company. The diaspora networks being built through OPEN Silicon Valley and the returning operators who are now investing in Pakistani startups represent another part of the same shift.

The limiting factor has never been Pakistan’s ability to produce engineers who can build at the global frontier. The limiting factor is the infrastructure, the capital, and the regulatory environment that gives the next cohort a credible path to build that work from Pakistan rather than in spite of being from it.
